Position Summary:
Develops, implements, leads and maintains a comprehensive system-wide Risk Management program. Organizes, and administers the D-HHS Risk Management Program and coordinates all program activities. Supports Claims Management with identification of potential compensable events.
  1. Oversees and implements a comprehensive Risk Management Program, and delineates risk management scope, authority, responsibilities, and policies.
  2. Establishes staffing and resource needs to operationalize a system-wide Risk Management program.
  3. Train and develop senior personnel in departments on the role of risk management, the risk management program, clinical risks, and a systems-based approach to incident management and principles of a just culture.
  4. Develops and maintains a written risk management plan including the annual evaluation of the plans’ effectiveness.
  5. Create and encourage high performance, teamwork and collaboration.
  6. Directs workloads and requests made to the risk managers to ensure alignment with strategic initiatives of the organization.
  7. Collaborates with Quality Improvement in overseeing internal incident reporting.
  8. Conducts system analysis identify patterns that can result in potentially compensable events.
  9. Develops Board summary reports of event trends, risk mitigation activities and action plans.
  10. Collaborates with the medical staff and organizational leadership in the investigation of clinical events including sentinel events, near misses, and significant adverse events; leads and/or participates in the development of root cause analyses.
  11. Works with various boards, committees, management, and care providers to develop common expectations and understandings for the risk management and captive insurance program.
  12. Review data and interpret statistics to identify trends of emerging liability exposures.
  13. Establishes methods, policies, and protocols to avoid, reduce, and minimize risk. Reviews with departments, medical staff, and administration.
  14. Provides input into institutional decision-making and goal setting.
Performs other duties as required or assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree with 7 years of experience in the health care field with experience in health care risk management, or the equivalent in education and experience required.
  • Strong knowledge of healthcare clinical fundamentals, patient safety standards, and performance improvement standards.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills including professional demeanor, excellent critical thinking skills, and strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Basic knowledge and skills with quality improvement (e.g. facilitation of root cause analysis).
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate effectively and concisely both verbally and in writing with individuals and groups at various levels and various disciplines.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and flexibly in a fast-paced, high growth environment
  • Leadership acumen and experience; someone who can be innovative and function as a change agent.
  • Strong proficiency with word processing, spreadsheet software, systems management and data entry.
  • Strong history of positive and cooperative relationships with senior leaders and physicians.
  • Experience with managing and developing an ERM (Enterprise Risk Management) function is strongly desired.
  • Ability to work with diverse populations.
  • Flexibility with schedule.
  • Experience in basic Project Management skills.
  • Strong sense of responsibility and accountability to ensure that work is completed accurately and timely.
  • Discretion and judgment in the handling of confidential and/or sensitive information.
  • Ability to organize, interpret and present data to drive decisions.
    Required Licensure/Certification Skills:
  • Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management (CPHRM) and/or
  • Associate in Risk Management (ARM) or
  • Certified Professional in Patient Safety (CPPS)
