Position Summary:


Assumes responsibility for the clinical physics requirements of Diagnostic Radiology, Cardiology and for fluoroscopy throughout the institution.  Performs or oversees testing required by the state and national bodies regulating imaging.  Evaluates, oversees, and provides instruction of quality control procedures and ensures that radiation safety techniques are followed.  Oversees the purchasing and maintenance of all imaging equipment for the Institution.  



  1. Provide medical physics services in X-ray, Fluoroscopy, computed tomography (CT), Mammography, Ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and Nuclear Medicine at DHMC.
  2. Directs and/or performs regulatory duties including acceptance testing, annual testing of imaging systems. 
  3. In accordance with the Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA), the American College of Radiology (ACR), maintains certification of the screening mammography program.
  4. Under ACR and the Joint Commission (TJC), maintains certification of CT, MRI, single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), positron emission tomography (PET), breast MRI and breast biopsy programs. 
  5. Implements and maintains TJC fluoroscopy standards throughout the institution. 
  6. Evaluates and approves protocols for all CT and fluoroscopy studies throughout the institution. 
  7. Actively participates in the purchasing and maintenance of imaging equipment. Advises the Director on equipment under consideration for purchase. Determines the performance characteristics necessary for imaging systems.
  8. Participates in the clinical aspects of diagnostic imaging to optimize diagnostic information while minimizing radiation dose and cost.
  9. Calculates patient and fetal radiation exposures and radiation doses in circumstances where they impact patient care and where required by regulatory bodies.
  10. Acts as a point of contact to relate and implement corrections of physician image quality concerns and advises the radiologists regarding imaging in special situations.
  11. Provides counsel to all hospital staff in matters of radiation exposure.
  12. Establishes and/or audits quality and maintenance programs related to all imaging equipment and supervises the calibration and the maintenance of all imaging systems.
  13. Maintains records for all testing and performs appropriate equipment surveys to demonstrate compliance with state and accrediting agency standards.
  14. Creates an environment of personalized service that encourages technicians and physicians to improve the imaging program as a whole.
  15. Oversees the annual testing of x-ray aprons and protection devises. 
  16. Performs x-ray shielding calculations for all systems and maintains records. 
  17. Participates in instructional programs for Cardiology, Radiology as well as radiation safety training programs throughout the institution.
  18. Maintains an active research program that produces publications and competes for grant funding. 
  19. Supports research programs that require or utilize imaging. 
  20. Some Regional travel required.
  21. Performs other duties as required or assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:
  • Graduate degree in medical physics or a related field.
  • PhD preferred.
  • Two (2) years of previous practice required.
  • Maintains relevant certification, competency and qualifications to test screening and diagnostic mammography, fluoroscopy, CT, MRI, SPECT and PET systems.
  • Qualified medical physicist in diagnostic imaging physics, nuclear medical physics and MRI physics.
  • Experience in an academic clinical environment preferred.
  • A research focus in an area of diagnostic radiology is preferred.
  • Demonstrated success in working on interactive teams including clinicians, hospital staff and administrators.
  • Previous teaching experience required
  • History of peer reviewed publications
Required Licensure/Certification Skills:

Certification by the American Board of Radiology (ABR) or the American Board of Medical Physics (ABMP)
