Perioperative Services has a temp 12-18 month position for an experienced CST First Assistant.  The ideal candidate coordinates safe, efficient, peri-operative care of patients undergoing surgery of all robotic procedures across all services. Provides immediate support to the surgeon during the operation and functions as a team leader to achieve optimal operational efficiency, safety and clinical excellence. The ideal candidate will be an integral member of the OR team and will function as a facilitator in the OR suite during robotics cases, coordinating safe and efficient flow of the surgical case, including set up, appropriate opening of surgical supplies and instrumentation, patient positioning and room turnover.

 

2 years’ experience as a CSTFA which includes at least 1 year experience as a CST FA for cases using the Intutive xi system.



Key Responsibilities
  1. Performs patient care for all patient types following Association of Surgical Assistants (ASA) recommended standards of practice and institutional policies and procedures.
  2. Develops, uses, and assists others to plan patient care that reflects updated technical knowledge, coordination of available resources, and a respect for patient rights.
  3. Evaluates, formulates, revises, and implements perioperative Surgical Tech practice and procedures.
  4. Functions as a facilitator in the OR suite during robotics cases, coordinating safe and efficient flow of the surgical case, including set up, appropriate opening of surgical supplies and instrumentation, patient positioning and room turnover.
  5. In collaboration with other team members, reviews the surgical plan and implements the necessary precautions to prevent patient injury or complication. Assesses patients and assists with positioning, prepping, and draping of patient during the perioperative period.
  6. Assists with orientation and education for other members of the health care team.
  7. Collaborates with leaders in process improvement, training of new staff and residents, evaluation and cost effective use of supplies, maintaining accurate surgeon preference cards, and monitoring program metrics.
  8. Provides hemostasis by clamping blood vessels, coagulating bleeding points, ligating vessels and by other means as directed and supervised by the surgeon.
  9. Provides exposure through appropriate use of instruments, retractors, suctioning, and sponging techniques.
  10. Handles and cuts tissue as directed by the surgeon during the operative procedure.
  11. Sutures the fascia, subcutaneous, and skin tissues under the direction of the surgeon.
  12. Applies surgical dressings at the direction of the surgeon.
  13. Performs core functions of Certified Surgical Technologist when First Assist duties are not required.

Performs other related duties as required or assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:
 
  • Graduate of an approved school of surgical technology or program accepted by the Association of Surgical Technologists required. 
  • Associates degree preferred
  • Maintains professional manner at all times, demonstrating flexibility, sound judgement and adaptability in decision making, problem solving and team building to function as an effective team member. 
  • Completion of a First Assist program 
  • Excellent communication skills
